Les Arcs - Freeride
Nestled in the heart of the Tarentaise Valley is the Freeride mecca of Les Arcs. So don't be fooled by the family vibe and ugly exterior as the terrain here is incredible. There's a reason so many free riders call this place home. Les Arcs is blessed with short but steep terrain that's never more than a 40 min hike from the lifts. Throw into the mix big cliffs and good snow coverage and you have everything a freerider needs.
The downside of this is that it gets tracked out quickly. But if you are keen and know where you are going then you will get the goods. While it's not really an area for backcountry touring it is close to La Plagne. La Plagne (which has some of the best touring in the Alps) is only a short gondola ride away.
As a resort is it slightly disjointed with a few small villages dotted around the area. Because of this you can stay down in Bourg St Maurice if you are on a budget. There is a train that will take you directly to Arc 1600 lifts in 10 mins. If you want to stay up in resort then our recommendation would be Arc 1950. A beautiful resort in itself with direct access to all of Les Arcs amazing terrain and with a good selection of bars and restaurants.
Freeride Project Athlete Leon Butler says
Les Arcs is an amazing place for beginner freeriders and professionals as there is terrain for every ability. For me, the ease of getting the train from Bourg to Les Arcs and straight into the big mountains is unrivalled. The terrain here is backed up by the fact they host the Les Arcs Freeride Week, a is a week of competitions. Because its so good it attracts the biggest names in the sport to compete on some of the steepest and most exposed faces in the Alps.
